See Kerikeri from a completely different perspective with The New Zealand Electric Boat Co. Departing from the Stone Store Wharf or Waipapa Landing, these self-drive electric boats offer a peaceful and environmentally conscious way to explore one of Kerikeri’s most beautiful waterways.
Before roads connected the area, the Kerikeri River was the main gateway into Kerikeri. Today, visitors can retrace this historic route aboard a silent electric boat, passing native bush, birdlife and some of New Zealand’s most significant heritage sites.
The boats are quiet, comfortable and easy to operate, allowing you to enjoy the river without the noise of a conventional motor. No boating licence or previous experience is required. Before setting out, guests receive operating instructions and a safety briefing, with lifejackets provided.
Choose from two distinctive boats. Akaroa is a spacious, purpose-built electric craft seating up to seven people and is particularly easy for beginners to steer. Solarly is a charming solar-powered English river launch with indoor and outdoor seating for up to six people.
Trips can begin at the historic Stone Store Wharf or Waipapa Landing, with one-way and return options available. A two-hour hire is recommended for a relaxed return journey, while a longer booking allows time to stop for lunch, enjoy a picnic or simply slow down and take in the surroundings.
Explore independently using the supplied navigation information or ask about guidance along the river. Around high tide, there is more water available for exploring, so visitors are encouraged to check tide times and book ahead.
This is a wonderfully peaceful experience for couples, families and small groups—and a memorable way to appreciate Kerikeri’s history and natural environment.
