The Akeake Historic Reserve Track begins at the boat-ramp end of Opito Bay beach, around 13 km north-east of Kerikeri. This DOC track splits into several short walking options, including Lizzie (Lizard) Bay, Tareha pā and a viewpoint over Tareha Point and the Akeake Historic Reserve.
The main Akeake Historic Reserve Track starts from Opito Bay and climbs by a series of steps to a four-way junction, where walkers can choose from several short routes. It is an easy-grade walk, covering approximately 1.4 km return and suitable for most ages and fitness levels.
Along the way, visitors are rewarded with peaceful native bush, elevated coastal views and opportunities to explore different corners of this beautiful reserve. You are rewarded with the reserve’s scenic viewpoints offer sweeping vistas across the Te Puna and Kerikeri Inlets, providing plenty of opportunities to pause, take in the scenery and appreciate the natural beauty of this special part of the Bay of Islands.
The walk starts at the pebbly shores of Opito Bay, a favourite spot for locals seeking a quiet swim, a spot of fishing or simply a moment to relax by the water.
Whether you’re looking for a short family-friendly walk, a scenic picnic spot or a chance to discover one of Kerikeri’s lesser-known coastal treasures, the Akeake Historic Reserve Track is a rewarding escape just a short drive from town
