The St Paul’s Rock Track may be short, but it delivers one of the finest viewpoints in the Far North. Beginning at the end of Old Hospital Road, the track climbs steadily through regenerating native vegetation towards the distinctive rock formation overlooking Whangaroa.

St Paul’s Rock is the remains of an ancient volcanic plug formed around 20 million years ago. Its distinctive shape and prominent position make it one of the harbour’s most recognisable natural landmarks.

As the track gains height, views begin to open across Whangaroa township, the marina and the harbour’s winding waterways. The final section is much steeper and requires walkers to use fixed chains to climb approximately 30 metres of exposed rock.

Although the chains provide assistance, a moderate to good level of fitness, confidence and mobility is required. The rock can become particularly slippery following rain, and the summit is exposed to strong wind.

The views from the top are outstanding. Whangaroa Harbour stretches out below, surrounded by forested ridges, rocky outcrops and sheltered bays. On a clear day, the summit provides an exceptional perspective of the harbour’s dramatic volcanic landscape.

The area is also culturally and archaeologically significant. Extensive Māori terraces surround Ohakiri, and shell middens can be seen near parts of the track. Please respect this important place and avoid disturbing archaeological features.

Allow approximately one hour for the return walk, including time to enjoy the views. Take extra care when descending, particularly on the chained section.
